Arizona has a license category for massage and bodywork therapy. Education and exam requirements are in place for those seeking this professional license. The licensing agency is the Arizona State Board of Massage Therapy.
First, you will need to be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or GED. Then, you need to attend an “Arizona recognized” massage therapy school or one focusing on bodywork therapy. The Arizona rule is that the school must consist of at least 700 hours of training. It is possible to attend an unaccredited school in Arizona, at least based on what I am reading in the application packet. But that would require testing to show that you received a quality education.
Some applicants must take a national massage therapy licensing/certification exam. They include applicants who went to a school outside of Arizona and applicants who went to an unaccredited school in Arizona.
Acceptable exams are the MBLEX and the test given by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).
There are a couple of other ways to get a massage therapy license in Arizona. The first is to have a license in another state for 5 consecutive years before your application date. The other way is to have NCBTMB certification and graduate from an approved school that had at least 500 hours of training. This means you have to have already passed the exam since that is one of the requirements for NCBTMB certification.
